Churches of Old Xanthi
This route is about 1 km, about 50 minutes and of moderate difficulty. The visitor will have the opportunity to visit the 5 large churches of Old Xanthi, landmarks of Christian worship and religious tradition.

The churches were built after the catastrophic earthquake of 1829, probably on the foundations of earlier Byzantine churches, always according to the standards set by the Ottoman Empire (small size and low height, similar to that of the adjacent houses).

Architecturally they belong to the type of simple basilicas and have gabled wooden roofs. They were built by groups of Epirotes, Western Macedonians and Thracian craftsmen. Of interest are the stone reliefs on their facades and the stone slabs with the year of erection and the cross.

77. Chapel of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary

Brief documentation:

The Chapel dedicated to the Nativity of the Virgin Mary is located at the beginning of Markou Botsari Street in the old town of Xanthi. It is located in the district of Agios Georgios and right next to this church. The chapel celebrates every year on September 8 and is open 24 hours a day.
The Chapel has been formed as an opening under the plateau on which the church is built, as the level is sloping in this area. At this point, the stonework with which the plateau of the church was formed is evident. Above the entrance to the Chapel there is a wooden lintel, while a decorative semicircular arch is formed.
On either side of the arch there are simple neoclassical decoration elements of the façade of the space, with false pilasters and false capitals and a cornice that divides the façade into two zones. There is also a stepped cornice at the end of the façade as decoration.
A newer addition is the fountain on the right side of the entrance to the chapel with a stone dolphin as a decorative motif.
