In the neighborhood of the Metropolis

56. Olympia Cinema

Brief documentation:

The building was designed from the beginning to function as a cinema. It was built in 1906 at a central point of the traditional settlement and belonged to the family Sophocles Arsenakis and Ourania Orfanidou. After the death of the latter in 1969, the building passed into the ownership of the son of the family, Romulos Arsenakis. During the period 1919-1946 it operated under the name "Pantheon", and then received the name "Olympia". In recent years it has been operating as a commercial enterprise (cafe, bar and video game store).
It is a ground floor building of folk architecture, made of stonework and brickwork, while it also includes reinforced concrete interventions. The main area of the building is constructed in a rectangular shape, while the floor is sloping, as there was the projection room with the stage. Next to the central hall there were smaller ones, which served as auxiliary spaces of the cinema. In the west courtyard an external staircase led to the room where the projection engineer was located. In the courtyard during the summer months there was an open-air cinema.
