Religious monuments of Old Xanthi
The route is about 2 km long, lasts about 80 minutes and is of low difficulty. In it, the visitor will have the opportunity to tour the most important religious monuments of old Xanthi. From the Sunne mosque to the chapel of Agioi Theodoroi you will find a reasonable number of Christian churches and chapels, mosques and the Catholic church that testify to the religious identity of the inhabitants and at the same time highlight the multicultural and multireligious character that the city of Xanthi had and still has today.

Their position in the urban fabric of the city highlights the importance of their character (with the layout of secular buildings around them), the need of residents for religious expression and their timeless peaceful coexistence.

Of interest are both their architectural configuration and their interior decoration with icons, frescoes, wood carvings on the iconostasis in Christian churches and tiles with plant decoration in the mihrab of mosques.

77. Chapel of the Nativity of the Virgin Mary

Brief documentation:

The Chapel dedicated to the Nativity of the Virgin Mary is located at the beginning of Markou Botsari Street in the old town of Xanthi. It is located in the district of Agios Georgios and right next to this church. The chapel celebrates every year on September 8 and is open 24 hours a day.
The Chapel has been formed as an opening under the plateau on which the church is built, as the level is sloping in this area. At this point, the stonework with which the plateau of the church was formed is evident. Above the entrance to the Chapel there is a wooden lintel, while a decorative semicircular arch is formed.
On either side of the arch there are simple neoclassical decoration elements of the façade of the space, with false pilasters and false capitals and a cornice that divides the façade into two zones. There is also a stepped cornice at the end of the façade as decoration.
A newer addition is the fountain on the right side of the entrance to the chapel with a stone dolphin as a decorative motif.
