Eclectic buildings of Old Xanthi
Through this route, about 1 km. and of low difficulty, the visitor has the opportunity to get to know the practice of eclecticism, as expressed in the buildings of old Xanthi. The route, about 50 minutes, starts from the area next to the river Kosynthos and ends at the western boundaries of the old town with the modern city, on the uphill slopes of the road leading to Stavroupoli.

Eclecticism is an architectural style of the 19th and 20th centuries, in which a variety of elements from various eras and styles are selected and used, in a single building. In Xanthi it is recognized on the facades of houses of rich tobacco merchants and other buildings.

More specifically, influences from neoclassicism (e.g. absolute symmetry, verticality) are recognized, while individual elements bear influences from Art Deco (e.g. strong decorative mood), central Europe (e.g. turret roof configuration or turret development), English Baroque (e.g. the use of red brick) and Romanesque style (e.g. arched openings and curved arches).
