Neoclassical and eclectic buildings of Old Xanthi
This route is about 3 km, about 80 minutes and of moderate difficulty. It starts from Antikas Square and ends at the border of the old town with the modern city to the west. Through this route, the visitor has the opportunity to get to know the practice of neoclassicism and eclecticism, as expressed in about 50 buildings of old Xanthi.

Neoclassicism appeared in the 18th and 19th centuries and is strongly influenced by the principles governing the architecture of classical antiquity. The buildings are distinguished for the simplicity of their geometric forms, the Doric detail, the simplicity, the absolute symmetry, the dividing lines of the vertical spreads and the pilasters with false capitals at the corners.

Eclecticism, on the other hand, is the architectural style of the 19th and 20th centuries, in which a variety of elements from various eras and styles are selected and used, in a single building. The eclectic buildings in Xanthi are influenced by neoclassicism (e.g. absolute symmetry, verticality), while individual elements are influenced by Art Deco (e.g. strong decorative mood), central Europe (e.g. turret roof configuration or turret development), English Baroque (e.g. the use of red brick) and Romanesque style (e.g. arched openings and curved arches).

96. Residence at 83 Evripidou Street

Brief documentation:

The residence was probably built in the early 20th century, at the end of Evripidou Street (at number 83).
It is a special building with neoclassical elements, restored today. The ground floor does not preserve many of its original morphological elements, which are preserved mainly on the first floor.
On the ground floor there is the opening of the entrance, where initially there would probably have been a skylight. On the first floor there are four openings, with a door leading to a balcony, which is supported by iron corbels, and with three windows. All openings on the first floor, both on the façade and on the side, have rough frames and decorative lintels.
On the façade the curved parapet stands out, which protrudes from the height of the roof of the building and is crowned with tiles. On the curved pediment that is formed, there is a frame where there would probably have been an inscription originally.
The building is located very close to the eastern end of the preserved traditional settlement of old Xanthi, which is defined on this side by the river Kosynthos. The river is the river Kossinitis of the ancient Greeks and the so called Çay of the old Xanthiotes.
The horses of the ancient Thracian king Diomedes, who, when they drank water from the river Kossinitis, became angry and devoured people, were caught by Hercules as part of his eighth labor. The river originates in the Rhodope Mountains and, after flowing through the city of Xanthi, flows into Lake Vistonida to the south of Xanthi.
